style guide: fall

this is an exciting new addition to the blog-site and it’s a place we plan to update often with new ideas, fresh inspiration and lots of creative clothing suggestions to help make planning your session lots of FUN!  we wanted to start with one of the most frequently asked questions…”what should we wear?”.  Deciding what to wear seems to be a daunting task, when really, it should be a carefree opportunity to have fun with your fashion!  and because choosing the right outfit can take your photos from “plain jane” to “truly stellar”, we’re here to offer some useful tips + tricks to help you hit the mark!

our #1 suggestion:  be yourself, just rev it up a notch.  this same idea applies if you’re a jeans + tee shirt kind of gal or a style vixon.  don’t be afraid of color, pattern + loads of texture.  you want your session to look + feel like the best version of yourself.  we recommend browsing catalogs + magazines + window shopping, many stores will already have pre-assembled outfits that can really help when trying to put something together.

our first recommendation is closely followed by our #2 suggestion:  match your style with the location + feel of your shoot.  so many times, we’ve arrived at a session to see an entire family in matching white shirts and khaki pants.  now, it’s not that these families wanted to wear matching outfits, their hearts were in the right place.  But here in lies the problem, when you don’t know what to do…you so easily revert back to a safe choice.  this is when you should pick-up-the-phone an CALL us, we’ll talk you down.  we’ll even come over and rummage through your closets with you if that would help.

that leads us to suggestion #3:  when in doubt, bring lots of options.  that’s right pack the trunk and haul it along for the ride.  as long as you don’t mind doing a quick change in the car, this can do wonders for your shoot.  you’ll have a couple of great options to choose from, giving you added variety.  and…if something isn’t working or you aren’t comfortable to move around ~ we can fix it, quick!

you’ll see in the samples below, we are working within the same color family without “matching” too much.  and everyone still gets to bring some personality to the table.

and finally, a note about newborn sessions:  the same rules apply for the family here.  be yourselves, wear comfortable clothing and bring a change or two…just in case.  as hard as it may be, break free of the basic black.  trust us, we completely understand how difficult it is to find something you feel good about wearing so soon after having a baby, this is 100% normal.  SO many new moms can relate.  some great options might be to try a loose fitting jersey dress or a a empire-top with leggings (see, not so scary right?).

as for the little one: simple is better.  remember, most of the photos will highlight the most delicate details of your new edition (wrinkles, teeny-tiny toes and baby-soft skin), so bare babies are often the best way to go. we do encourage our new parents to bring accessories like receiving blankets, hats + bloomers.  and don’t be afraid to pack other little items like baby blocks (to spell with), a teddy bear or a treasured knit throw your great-grandmother made.  these can all be great ways to personalize your baby’s session.
